Basically, each item in the wardrobe tab is generated on two pieces of data - the renderable (the physical art that you see) and the tint. each unique combination of A+B equals one wardrobe unlock. Most of the time, the tint is just a default that changes none of the colors in the renderable. Early on, non-artists (designers like me*) would slap a custom tint onto the renderable to add visual variation to items in the game. This was mostly done before the wardrobe system existed. As a result, a number of near identical items appear in the wardrobe system. Why do we not just simplify the system? Because we revamped the wardrobe system, and because our goal was to make the functionality better without screwing up any outfits players were already using, if we just discarded the variety of tints that were already existing, there was a chance we would inadvertently mess up someone's outfit where they had gotten the colors JUST RIGHT in part of some particular base tint.So that is the explanation. And why the * above? Because when a non-artist tints existing art, the odds of it looking... not good... go way up. Take that shield with the bright red pictured above - that is why I am a game designer and not an artist.
