EU Shard palyerbase population

Hi guys,

I am new to this game , started playing on EU shard Zaviel , and i am enjoying this far (lvl 14). However, a decent number of players is rather important to me, and i got the feeling that the server is rather empty. Is the game dead in EU ? If not, why is the best shard to play when it comes to population number?
