Depending on what "content" you're talking about of course, but it's not like anything you can get from other sources is being locked out by affinity system. New things are added but they work exactly the same as exclusive fluffs you can get from buying packs. Not to mention you can still buy patron using REX (meaning you do not have to spend real money if you can't\don't want to) and unlock all the tasty stuffs from the affinity list.
If you don't want to buy patron even for in-game currency but still want rare exclusive stuff... well, you might as well just wait for some giveaways or events (it has been mentioned that affinity points might be given to players during some special events\holidays etc).
To anyone who says gambling on lockboxes for a mount or a key is better than a guaranteed purchase via affinity system - you're wrong in many ways.
