noob question: Why is postage cost so high on mail?

Hi all,

new to RIFT, and having fun. But I notice it's fairly expensive to send mail to my other characters (at least from my noob experience of highest level character being 23). The postage is often more expensive then the vendor sell price of an item...

Does this get negligible at higher levels? What are the alternatives to using mail? I'm not in a guild yet... How well does the Guild Bank work?
